This lovely comedy-drama is an impressive debut from a young Indian writer-director. One day Rajiv’s elderly father announces that he wants to travel to Varanasi on the banks of the Ganges, to die. Rajiv reluctantly accompanies him. Hotel Salvation is a spiritual hospice where visitors can stay for 15 days, enjoying marijuana-laced lassis and hoping to achieve ‘salvation’ before death. As days turn into weeks, father and son air their grievances and face up to mortality. Where you might expect sadness and grief, the film gives you cheery residents and bright, colourful Indian scenes. It is a beautiful film, with a dreamy, hypnotic atmosphere, full of real human warmth.
