Northamptonshire’s award-winning theatre company White Cobra Productions starts 2019 with the first script written by one of the most acclaimed modern playwrights.
The Beauty Queen of Leenane put Martin McDonagh on the theatrical map when it was first performed, with the Broadway production uniquely leading to Tony award nominations for all four members of the cast.
This modern classic of Irish theatre, from the director of the Oscar winning Three Billboard Outside Ebbing Missouri, and In Bruges tells the story of Maureen Foley. Now middle aged, she's a plain and lonely woman who lives with her manipulative, ageing mother Mag. Her interference in Maureen’s first and potentially only romantic relationship sets in motion a chain of events that are as tragically funny as they are horrific.
Playing Maureen is WCP co-founder Kate Billingham, who won a best actress award at an international drama festival in 2018 for her performance in "Glorious - The True Story of Florence Foster Jenkins, the worst singer in the world!" Her mother Mag is played by Kimberley Vaughan (Glorious, The Shakespeare Revue, Cloud). Making his debut for White Cobra is Jof Davies (Defying Gravity, Brief Encounter, It’s a Wonderful Life) as Ray Dooley, with the cast completed by Richard Jordan (Scaramouche Jones, Little Shop of Horrors, Duets) as Pato.
Also new to White Cobra is director Liz Clarke, who has worked extensively as an actress and director for Masque Theatre in Northampton and in Market Harborough where she has directed Rumours, Breaking the Code and The Exorcism.
The play appears for one night only at The Wharf Theatre on Saturday 30 March.
