Why does Devizes need a railway station?

The Devizes area with a population of around 31,000 is the largest town in Wiltshire not to be serviced by rail.
Significant employers within Wiltshire have said that having a railway station would significantly help them to both conduct business and attract new talent.
Devizes is an area surrounded by both beautiful scenery and historic sites. A railway station would help boost connectivity, enhancing tourism, and reducing the impact on roads.

Why Devizes Parkway?

In 1900 most railway stations were in the centre of a town. Today this adds to congestion. From Devizes all the nearby railway stations have both access problems and impact on traffic issues in those areas. Therefore driving and parking is an issue. The proposal today is for a parkway station with parking for 400 cars.

When will it happen?

The DDP are targeting 2023. In order to be successful we will have to produce a plan that works for Devizes, Devizes Town Council, Wiltshire County Council, Network Rail, and GWR, the current franchise holder.
To this end the DDP has created a working group that contains both representation of the Town Council and Wiltshire County Council, expertise from the railway industry as well as regeneration and development expertise. The group is chaired by Peter Lay a former chair of the DDP.

What happens next?

The DDP have already created a submission document for GWR/Network Rail to consider. If they want to take this forward they may have 3 or 4 further stages to consider.

The DDP working group has gained some funds from Wiltshire County Council to undertake a feasibility study and apply for planning. This work has already started and when we have some graphical information we can present this to you.

If you would like to get in touch please contact the DDP using 01380 738750 or email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

How the railway could look in the future!

Transwilts have produced a diagram that represents a plan for the railway system within Wiltshire that hopes to increase connectivity both North and South as well as East and West
