Devizes CCTV
Based in the Crown Centre the Devizes CCTV Control Room houses one of the most up to date CCTV systems. The system is run under the auspices of the Devizes Development Partnership (DDP) on behalf of the community. The system officially went live on the 1st November 2007 – in practice it had been in operation for several weeks prior to the launch.
The first phase consisting of 4 high definition Pan Tilt & Zoom (PTZ) speed dome wireless cameras. Two are located in the Market Place one above Cielo Blu and the other on the corner of the Nat West Bank building. These cameras cover the whole of the Market Place from the Town Hall at one end to the Palace cinema and Kebab shop at the other. Two more cameras located on the Caffee Nero building and on No 16 the Brittox cover The Brittox, Little Brittox, High Street and Wine Street and Maryport Street from M&S to the Old Post Office and The Brittox. This in effect covers the main retail thoroughfares of the town centre.
The video signals from each camera are beamed back to the control centre by radio (very similar to your home wireless computer network). The images are recorded 24/7 on a massive hard disk array capable of storing 31 days worth of data.
The second phase extended the system in 2009 with 4 more cameras to cover the Brewery corner and Northgate Street, The Market Place and New Park Street up to the Crown. Also a new camera outside The Castle Hotel will cover the back of West Central car park (where the super loo is), the M&S end of Maryport Street, Monday Market Street and the roundabout. Another camera outside the Estcourt Street Vet’s Practice (Roses’ roundabout) covers from the toilets on the small Green to Sidmouth Street. The remaining camera positioned outside the entrance to Sainsbury’s will cover Sidmouth Street, Sheep Street, Monday Market Street, the Old Post Office end of Maryport Street and should be able to “see”  the entrance to Tesco car park. This further enhances the coverage of retail areas of the town.
In 2012 the camera previously located at 1 Maryport Street had to be re-located to 16 The Brittox.
The system is run by a paid part time CCTV Manager and manned by volunteers from the community.
It should not be seen as an entity in its own right but part of a general community safety initiative. We operate in conjunction with the Police and PCSO’s and the local town centre stores that subscribe to the Storenet Radio system. This enables us to communicate both with the stores who might have spotted shoplifters or persons behaving inappropriately. They can notify the control room and alert each other of a potential problem. We in turn can communicate directly with the Police Control Room and Police officers on the ground.

There are several stores on Storenet (a community linked radio scheme),  and Devizes Town Council Staff, Civil Enforcement Officers (Parking Wardens), Street Cleaners and the Police carry Storenet Radios.
This means that we can react pretty quickly to a live incident. We can also assist with providing recorded evidence to assist in prosecution of suspected offenders (and have done so).
In the time that it has been operational it has contributed to several arrests, kept an eye on a number of potentially suspicious events/individuals and dealt with several other incidents. Along with other initiatives such as the Neighbourhood Policing Teams, we believe that we have made a significant contribution to the reduction of crime in the town centre (down by 24% - Police figures – on last year).   We believe that this contributes significantly towards the wellbeing of our townsfolk and to the economic advantage of local businesses.  In short people feel that Devizes is generally a safe place to live, work and shop as a result of the use of CCTV in the Town Centre in a recent survey 80% of respondents indicated that the implementation of CCTV contributed to them feeling safer..
We are constantly on the look out for volunteers to assist with monitoring the system.  No previous experience is necessary as full training will be given.  The only requirements are that you should be over the age of 18 and have no criminal record.  Volunteers are Police checked.
